Newborn {Madeleine – 11 Days}

I met Jan, Madeleine’s lovely mum, through our equally lovely friend, Emma. I was lucky enough to attend Jan and Charlie’s wedding last year, as a guest, so I was thrilled when I found out they were expecting a tiny new arrival in May this year. Maddie arrived right on schedule, and fortunately the destination wedding I was supposed to have been shooting got postponed, so I was able to photograph this gorgeous little girl while she was still super new!

Maddie’s story started out like an episode of Grey’s Anatomy: Jan had gone in for surgery to have a cyst removed, and she was literally being wheeled down the corridor to the operating theatre when some hospital stuff came running after her, shouting, “Stop! She’s pregnant!” What a fun start to life!

A Rainbow-filled May Day Wedding

This shoot was featured on Rock My Wedding a couple of weeks ago, so I’m now able to share it!

It all started when Gwenda (flower and all-round stylist extraordinaire) and I had a conversation about Rainbow wedding goodness. We both loved the idea of incorporating rainbows into a wedding, but without making it feel too much like a children’s birthday party or cheesy costume party, and Gwenda hit on the idea of making the theme “May Day” and letting the rainbows come in naturally from there. And so the theme took shape: the May Queen Bride and her seven attendants – 6 bridesmaids and a page boy in every colour of the rainbow – plus her King of the May.

Villa Baroncino, Italy Wedding {Louise & Brian}

There are so many things I need to share about Louise & Brian’s wedding. Most of which are pictures: so many joyful moments, so much love, so many happy tears, and so much beauty! But other things, too: the excitement of all the guests at being able to come to Italy and share a week-long holiday with the couple they love; the way every person there welcomed me like I was part of the party; Louise and Brian themselves, and their sense of utter fun and silliness (which I appreciated, being silly too); an amazing fun bridal party; the song from “Love Actually” making me tear up as bridesmaids walked down the aisle; everyone singing along to “That’s Amore” like it was the best song in the world during the cake-cutting; Brian and his best men cooking breakfast for the girls on the morning of the wedding (and including me in it!); the amazing many-coursed reception dinner; the crazy dancing…and much, much more.

Enchanting bridal headwear from Ellsewhere Bride

Natalie (the immensely talented designer and creator of Ellsewhere) needed some photos to showcase her new bridal headpieces, and when I saw her fantastic collection I was more than happy to oblige! Have a look at her website: she not only makes beautiful headwear, but also the coolest animal masks I’ve ever seen, eerily real prosthetics, and adorable little steampunkish monsters. Love it all!

The dresses we used are by the lovely Charlotte of Wilden Bride, and Natalie and Mel (our gorgeous model) did Mel’s hair and make-up themselves. Oh, multi-talented people; I love them.

South African Garden Wedding {Loren & Jono}

I met Loren years ago when we were in Community Theatre together. So I was very excited when she asked me to shoot her wedding in Johannesburg last month! The trip coincided beautifully with another wedding I attended as a guest (that of my best friend), so everything worked out perfectly – even if I don’t want to set foot on a plane again for at least a month!

I was really pleased to find out, a few weeks before this wedding, that the decor was being done by my lovely and talented friend Eve from Splendid Affairs. I’ve really missed working with her since I emigrated, so it was wonderfully serendipitous! In fact, everything about this wedding was made up of lovely coincidences – it turns out I’d met two of the three bridesmaids before, as they’re both friends of friends!

The day was just beautiful, with a late afternoon ceremony overlooking the dam at Toadbury Hall, photos in the sunset, and a fantastic party on the veranda afterwards. Loren and Jono, thanks so much for asking me to capture your wedding!

Alice in Wonderland

Long ago, before the Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland movie came out, I had a vague idea of doing an Alice-themed shoot; but as with all vague ideas that never get anywhere beyond that stage, I just didn’t get around to it. Then suddenly Alice was everywhere: there were real weddings, inspiration shoots, Wonderland-themed DIY projects, and doing one of my own just seemed like overkill. But along the way I’d been picking up bits and pieces that I thought would work in the shoot if it ever happened.

Then we made the decision to move to England, and I realised that I’d better do the shoot before I had to decide what to do with the props when I packed up my home! I also had the perfect “Alice” in mind: Sara, with whom I’d worked at a bookshop a few years before. My landlady and friend, Mel, who owns a wardrobing/costume business, and does make-up as well (she even did my own make-up for my wedding in 2008), had the perfect little white dress, which I supplemented with a blue bow I’d found in a box at my community theatre group! Mel did Sara’s make-up as well. The flowers, vases and belljars were provided by my friend Eve of Splendid Affairs – I had a definite vision of moss, mushrooms and belljars – and I bought some mixed mushrooms at the supermarket, which I added in myself. Everything else – the keys, clock, pocketwatch, necklace, etc -belonged to me, and we found a way to use them to add to the theme!

It snowed. And, well, because I’m from Africa, I was more than super excited. I pretty much thought it was the best thing I’d ever seen on the ground. Which meant that I had to do a shoot in it, of course!

Charlotte (lovely designer of lovely dresses) and I had been talking for a while about doing a trash the dress in one of her wedding dresses, so when snow was forecast I figured we should combine the two! Charlotte brought two gorgeous dresses and her brave face along with her, and we hit up a cemetery in south-west London and frolicked a bit in the unexpected sun. And then shivered in a cold and muddy park. Charlotte even lay down in the snow for me! Oh, the power I have…

The Only Lovers Left Alive {A Vintage Gothic Shoot at Lesnes Abbey}

Finally I can share these images with you! Aside from a couple of Facebook sneak peeks, and a pair that I threw into my “Best of 2012″ blogpost, I’ve had these waiting for months to be blogged – they were lined up for a feature in Unique Bride’s latest issue, and I wasn’t allowed to share them until the magazine came out!

The shoot was the brainchild of Lau Delpech from Frenchmade, and she pulled together some amazing suppliers to make it come to life! I loved that I could go a little more editorial, a little more high fashion (all those seasons of Next Top Model had to be good for something!) than I usually can at a wedding. And all the details…well, details make me sing. I loved the whole vintage-meets-gothic setup! Just gorgeous.

Molly Dishwasher: A caravan & farm Trash the Dress {Niki & Andrew}

Two days after their wedding, Niki and Andrew organised for me to come to Molly Dishwasher, the little caravan on a farm where they were spending their honeymoon. It was a gorgeous place, with fields and trees for miles, and we even got some of the sun that had eluded us on their wedding day! A Christmas Wedding at Petersham Nurseries {Niki & Andrew}

Christmas trees, fairy lights, glass conservatories, a vintagey Christmas Market, and a couple so in love they couldn’t stop smiling and kissing…that was Niki and Andrew’s wedding in a nutshell. Petersham Nurseries was the perfect spot for this intimate wedding – no seating plans, no plated meals, no speeches, no garter and bouquet toss – just love, friends, family, great “help yourself” buffet food, and more LOVE.

Perfect.

Fearless Award

This is my first time winning any sort of competition for my work, so I’m obviously crazy excited! 261 other images were also awarded in this round, and there were so many incredible images in there that I’m honoured (and astounded) to be included. A Look Back: 2012

2012: the year of enormous changes. After three years of doing wedding photography in Johannesburg, my husband and I decided to uproot ourselves and move to London; a huge decision not only personally, but also for my business. After all, I was still fairly new on the scene and had just started to get established. Moving countries meant pretty much restarting from the ground up, except of course that this time I had some lovely pictures of my SA couples to convince my new clients to hire me! I want to give a special thanks to Rachel and Geoff and Clare and Ricky, who hired me for their 2012 weddings before I had even set foot in the UK! Your confidence in me meant the world! And, of course, thank you to every other couple who had me shoot their weddings, engagement and anniversary shoots this year, as well as all the wonderful vendors who brought me into their collaborations and allowed me to shoot some amazing styled shoots!

Below is a selection of my favourite moments from the year. And there were a LOT.

Finally, this year seemed to have been the year of the babies for my past couples! I love being Facebook friends with my clients, because then I can see all the pictures of their new family members. So congratulations to Daleen and Aaron on the birth of Lilly, Chiara and David on the birth of Massimo, Kyra and Nick who are about to welcome their baby at any moment, and Taryn and Marc who have just announced they’re expecting! I’m so happy for all of you – and any of my other past couples that I don’t know about who’ve expanded their families, drop me a line and let me know!

Islington, London Wedding {Morgan & Dan}

Morgan and Dan are just the cutest. Morgan is from America, but met British Dan over here, and they now live in London. So this is just part one of their wedding celebration – part two happens next year in Connecticut for their American friends and family! Oooh. Two weddings; how awesome! I wouldn’t have minded doing that.

Part One: London was fantastic. Yes, it rained all day, but it didn’t put a damper on anyone’s enthusiasm, and Morgan and Dan gallivanted happily from location to location under a large polka dot umbrella. My favourite part was doing some of the photos at the pub where they met – The Lexington – where Morgan took a fancy to Dan’s snuggly grey cardigan (which also made an appearance on the day). Then it was off to St Chad’s near King’s Cross for a fab evening reception – what a stunning venue!

A Rock ‘n Roll Circus Wedding in Bristol {Charlie & Simon}

It’s been six months since I held that competition for free wedding photography to one awesome couple. When I saw Charlie and Simon’s entry for a Rock ‘n Roll-themed wedding to be held in a circus training school that used to be a church, I was sold. I immediately put them on my shortlist, and apparently everyone else thought their wedding sounded as fantastic as I did, because they won by a landslide, with more than two thirds of the votes!

You might remember back in July I shot the wedding of Sarah and Carl, who took second place in the competition. When Charlie saw their wedding on my blog, she told me, “Our wedding is kind of like the evil twin of that one!” And she wasn’t wrong. With the main theme of the wedding being red and black, including a stunner of a red dress, the tables named after rock songs, a live rock band, and a constant outpouring of smoke lit up by red, purple and blue lights, as well as wedding photos using all the graffiti in the heart of Bristol, this couldn’t have been more rock ‘n roll if it tried.

I absolutely adore my job. I gave away two free weddings because I knew they would be awesome and unique (which was kind of the criteria ) and that I’d get some amazing pictures and have a blast doing it. These two weddings were at complete opposite ends of the spectrum, and I loved them both, because they were personal, fun and unique. (And oddly, not a white wedding dress in sight!) So please, do YOU at your wedding. That’s what makes it great.

Westcliff Wedding {Cherry & Scott}

Cherry came to me as a referral from one of my previous lovely brides, Lauren, who got married to Ross in May last year. Lauren was one of Cherry’s bridesmaids, and Ross was on official puppy-wrangling duty (more on that later). It’s always great to see my past couples again at weddings!

Cherry & Scott’s Westcliff wedding was all style and elegance, and I have to say that their reception decor was some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. Each table was given a colour, and then filled with masses of flowers in that colour, along with matching menus, favours and “advice to the couple” cards! It was breathtaking, especially once all the candles were lit. I must have photographed every flower at least twice.

Cherry and Scott are such a lovely couple: sweet, fun, and up for anything. They had their puppy brought in for some photos (hence the dog-wrangler!), they had a massive bunch of stunning balloons, and they climbed over rooftops for the perfect shot. What more could a photographer ask?

Rickety Barn Wedding, Cambridgeshire {Penny & Ben}

Penny and Ben were married the Saturday before I left for South Africa, and what a gorgeous wedding it turned out to be! The weather was perfect for their outdoor ceremony in a forest, there were red balloons all over the place (balloons totally gladden my heart), the guests were treated to a tea party before the ceremony, and the whole day was filled with giant smiles, laughter, and tears of joy from everyone. There were so many little details that, as usual, I went somewhat overboard, but it did make everything that little extra bit special.

The Raven Princess {Southside House, Wimbledon}

I’ve been doing quite a few styled shoots lately, and they’ve got me really excited. Mostly because they’re different to weddings, while still having the same prettiness (which, apparently, I crave) to work with. A styled shoot is so much more planned and less spontaneous than a wedding day, but at the same time you can still spot something and go, “I have a clever idea..what if we tried THIS?” And there’ll be time to do it, and willing participants, because a styled shoot is all about getting creative and creating a “wow” image, which often there isn’t time for, or interest in, on a wedding day. My favourite moment at this shoot was scouting locations with fellow Photographer Hugh Miller, and seeing a child-sized doorway, and knowing exactly what I wanted Helena to do in it! The words “broken-down doll” were used a lot, I recall.

I also loved that Sabrina and Charlotte created so many different looks: some bridal, some not at all. It was so much fun, and a great change, to work with a look that wasn’t supposed to be “pretty”, so I could get more edgy, angular expressions and poses from Helena. She looks so completely different in the beauty shots as opposed to the darker, raven-inspired shots, and it was fascinating to work with those looks to create a different style of photo to match.

South Woodford Wedding {Clare & Ricky}

Clare found me in the most awesome way – last year, whilst Googling “grey bridesmaid dresses”, she came across an image I’d taken at a 2010 wedding. She liked it so much that she clicked over to see who the photographer was, and when she saw that I was in South Africa, but moving to London before her wedding, it seemed like fate! She and Ricky booked me immediately, and I was thrilled to have a couple who were willing to do that, despite some concerned friends and family asking if they were sure I was really coming!

Fast forward to nearly a year later, and I was most definitely present to shoot their wedding in South Woodford. I loved all the DIY decor in the church hall, and the fact that the tables were all named after various mythological fairytale types. Clare is a Brownie Brown Owl, and her Brownie pack was very much present in the ceremony, doing a line by line reading that got even me a little emotional!

Savile Club Wedding {Gemma & Matt}

Gemma and Matt were married on a lovely September Saturday at St James’ Church in Clerkenwell, with the reception at the gorgeous and elegant Savile Club in Mayfair. I was second shooting for Eliza Claire Photography – thanks for having me along! The whole day was just beautiful and stylish, and since those things make me happy, I had a very lovely day indeed.

They were just faking, I swear! All Matt’s brother’s idea (which I was all over, of course!).

A Pretty Pastel Bridesmaid Shoot {The Secret Garden, Kent}

I was so excited to be a part of this amazing styled shoot! This was one of those exceptional experiences where everyone gets together to create something beautiful, by pooling all of their talents. The whole thing was organised and styled by the lovely Gwenda Wilkes of The Vintage Floral Design Co., and I was lucky enough to photograph it! The idea was to create a magical, whimsical scenario, with the focus more on the bridesmaids, flowergirls and pageboys than the usual wedding stuff. Our child models were wonderfully willing, and looked gorgeous in their outfits by Little Bevan! There’s a full list of all the contributors, who were many and lovely, at the bottom of the post. Rhinefield House Wedding in The New Forest {Sumien & Julian}

A few weeks ago, fellow photographer Lizanne Higgs (who assisted me on Rachel and Geoff’s wedding in Cambridge in April) asked if I would come along and second shoot for her in the New Forest. I’d been there before, and there were wild horses, so obviously I said yes. Sumien and Julian’s wedding was held at the gorgeous Rhinefield House on a perfect summer day in August. There was even a rainbow. Yes, a RAINBOW. My day was made.

Colourful couple shoot at South Bank {Amrit & John}

Amrit and John are getting married in October, and they decided to have their engagement session along the quirky, colourful part of the south bank in London. I’m crazy about bright colours, and that area is filled with them, so we had a ball! It was one of the really hot days we’ve been enjoying in London recently, which means we had to do a lot of people-dodging, but I think we got quite good at it by the end. They should make it a new Olympic sport.

Adrienne and Kevin are South Africans who now live in Surrey. They got married in South Africa last year, which I photographed for them, and when they found out I had moved to London, they asked me to do a couple session, so they could have some great photos of themselves around the big London landmarks. I am so behind the idea of having regular photos taken of you and your spouse/partner/other half/loved ones – you don’t need to wait until your wedding day, or stop after your wedding day! Just take them.

A Village Fete Humanist Wedding {Sarah & Carl}

So…remember a few months ago when I ran this competition for someone to win their wedding photography free? And then I decided to give the prize both to the winner and the couple who came in second place? Well, that lovely couple who came second was Sarah and Carl, and all I can say is: Best. Decision. Ever. to shoot their wedding, because it was so exactly the kind of wedding I love! Huge tent on the village green? Check. Family and friends helping to put everything together, from the bunting to the table decor? Check. A house full of people who were just excited to be there and share the day with Sarah and Carl? Check. Bride and Groom totally in love, going from tears to smiles in a split second the whole day long? Check. Couple willing to climb over fences to get into the field I wanted to shoot in? Double check.

Add to this a turquoise wedding dress, a fantastic humanist ceremony, peacock feathers everywhere, amazing food, desserts that everyone pitched in to bring, heartfelt speeches and a BARNDANCE, and you might begin to get an idea of how awesome this wedding was.

The four groomspeople (three men and one lady) were the Fantastic Four!

And the Ushers were…well, you see. I laughed SO hard when I saw this!

The Photography Farm: Hippy Luxe Wedding shoot

I’m finding it hard to put the experience that was The Photography Farm into words. It’s an amazing three-day workshop that’s so much more than a workshop; rather it’s like a group of friends getting together and discussing their businesses, getting advice from everyone else (but especially from the talented Lead Farmer Lisa Devlin and Kat Williams of Rock ‘n Roll Bride fame!). And while we weren’t friends when we arrived, because we had never met before, I think it’s safe to say we were friends by the time we left. And that, actually, is part of Lisa’s mission statement.

The second and third days of the farm are devoted to talks and discussions on everything from post-production to blogging to running your business efficiently. But the first day…ah, the first day is devoted to some amazing styled shoots, which are set up just for us, and which basically blew me away. We started with an engagement session for one of Lisa’s real-life couples, but I’m going to share that at a later date, since this post is already getting slightly photo-heavy. So the following photos are part of the “Hippy Luxe” wedding shoot, complete with a real-life couple with dreadlocks, a Moroccan-feel tent, and the most phenomenal twig headdress I’ve ever seen in my life.

A Backyard Carnival Wedding {Milly & Dave}

A few weeks ago, fellow expat photographer Kate Newman asked me if I’d like to shoot with her on a lovely backyard circus-themed wedding. Well, clearly I wasn’t about to say no to that, so off we went to Maidenhead on Jubilee Sunday…which also ended up being one of the rainiest days of the year! Even the Queen couldn’t fix that, but it didn’t matter to Milly and Dave, who went on with their day happily anyway. And a little bit of rain and mud couldn’t dampen this gorgeous couple’s spirit! It was a beautiful day in every way.

Tower Bridge Wedding {Pat & Chris}

Last week I shared Pat and Chris’ engagement session, and today I’m going to show you their wedding! Which was awesome and fun, just like Pat and Chris themselves.

First of all, I had no idea you could get married inside Tower Bridge, so that was pretty epic. The ceremony was held in one of the upstairs rooms, and then I got to take Pat and Chris out to one of the topmost balconies for a quick photo op, while the guests amused themselves in the glass-panelled walkways between the two towers. We then took the entire lot outside for some group shots, whereupon Pat decided to buy ice creams for everyone (I think the ice cream van guy thought it was Christmas!). We ended up back inside the Engine Rooms, where the reception was held; where, as usual, I got choked up on emotional speeches, and then laughed uproariously with everyone else as Pat whipped out a blowup guitar and danced around like a rock star to “I believe in a thing called love”. An amazing, sweet, fun and relaxed day for a couple who are all those things too!

Tower Bridge Engagement {Pat and Chris}

Pat and Chris were married the weekend before last at Tower Bridge, and they decided to do their engagement shoot around the area as well – which worked out really well, since we got to use some great spots around More London that would have been too far to walk on the wedding day. Pat and Chris also indulged in their favourite treat of ice cream from the van at the entrance to the bridge, and all in all, just had lots of fun, which is exactly the way I love my photo sessions to be! I also fell in love with Pat’s quirky style – her 1950s-style dress covered in retro B-movies posters, coupled with a bright green petticoat and cute yellow shoes, just made my day!

Chic country wedding {Marlette and Warren}

You might remember Warren and Marlette from their awesome urban engagement shoot a few months ago. They brought a lot of cute props along on that shoot, so I knew their wedding would be just as full of lovely and fun details, and I was right. This was the third and last of the weddings I went back to South Africa to shoot in April, and it didn’t disappoint! The ceremony and reception were held at the lovely little Tin Roof Cafe in Pretoria, and I loved the country chic feel in there! The flowers and table decor were done by the wonderful Eve of Splendid Affairs, and my second shooter for the day was Darrell Fraser.

Wedding {Kate and JP}

Kate and JP’s wedding was the second of my three South African weddings, and it was, true to the fantastic clients I have, an absolute blast. I don’t think Kate stopped laughing the entire day, let alone smiling. They got married at St Peter’s, right opposite Zoo Lake, and we did their couple shoot in a park in Parkview. I had them on the swings, the see-saw, the merry-go-round…I don’t think the day could have been more fun!

I also call this day “The return of the cousins” – Kate, you see, is the cousin of Craig (of Jade and Craig, whose wedding I shot in January 2010), AND Cathy (of Cathy and Sean, from December 2010)! I’m just working my way through the family. I had an amazing time at both those weddings, and this one didn’t disappoint – clearly, this is one awesome family! I’m glad I nabbed them.

One of Kate’s bridesmaids made these shoes for her to wear at the reception!

Snacks for the guests to have on their way to the reception, which was a good hour’s drive in traffic.

Afternoon Garden Wedding {Lucinda and Rob}

Lucinda and Rob were married in April, the first of three weddings I went back to South Africa to shoot. They had a lovely relaxed afternoon wedding at the ever-gorgeous Shepstone Gardens in Johannesburg, and the pretty vintage chic decor completely blew me away! Belljars and ribbons and birdcages and teacups everywhere! Plus I hardly ever get to shoot outside receptions, so this was an added treat for me. Add to this that Rob and Lucinda are just lovely, sweet people, with wonderful friends and family who made me feel like I was at the party too, and a wonderful time was had by Andre (Andre Sonnekus, who was my excellent assistant shooter for the day) and me. Shooting weddings like this makes my job not seem too much like work

Wedding at Kings College Cambridge {Rachel & Geoffrey}

Geoff and Rachel are just the sweetest couple, and I love them to bits. Especially since they took a big chance on me and booked me to shoot their April wedding last year, while I was still in South Africa, promising valiantly that yes, I really was coming to the UK, and I really would be there on their wedding day! Once I finally met up with them one rainy morning in Islington, we got on famously, and I knew their day was going to be just lovely. And, obviously, I was right. Unfortunately no pictures were allowed during the ceremony, but I love the shots I got of Rachel high-fiving everyone as she and Geoff exited the chapel, and the light beaming down on them was AMAZING.

A Vintage Tea Party Wedding {Chloe & Emma}

When the lovely Shell de Mar asked me if I’d like to come along and run the photobooth at a pretty tea-party-themed wedding, my answer was “heck yes!”, of course! While I didn’t attend the ceremony or couple shoot, I had plenty of time before the guests arrived to take photos of the decor, and when you see these pictures you’ll understand why I was so excited about that! Maryanne and her crew from Jam and Tea did an incredible job dressing up Orleans House’s stable reception room to within an inch of its life, with vintage teacups, bunting, and tasty treats coming together to create a tea party that would make the Mad Hatter proud. The whole event was just vintage girly chic, and when I saw Chloe in her 1950s-inspired dress with a full pink petticoat, and Emma in her elegant, Old Hollywood-inspired gown, I understood why. Two brides in wedding dresses = a doubly-excited Kat. And I get pretty excited about wedding dresses at the best of times.

So, a couple of weeks ago I had a competition through Rock ‘n Roll Bride, where one fabulous couple in the UK could win their wedding photography, as shot by me, for free. All they had to do was tell me (and show me, on a Pinterest board), how much awesome-sauce they were putting into their wedding.

The response was fantastic, and I’ve narrowed it down to three lovely couples, whose weddings sound full to the brim with awesomeness, just the way I like it. All YOU have to do now is vote for one of them to win on the poll at the bottom of this post! And share it around with everyone you know, cos I’m sure these guys will appreciate the love.

Let’s meet the finalists!

1) Becky and John

Becky owns a company called Swank jewellery, where she designs and makes seriously funky jewellery, and also works as a youth worker. John is training to be a surveyor, and on the side he makes booty bassline music and raps sleazy lyrics over the top.Ha! That’s bizarrely awesome. Here’s what Becky had to say about their wedding day:

“I’m getting hitched on the 1st of September 2012 in Rutland, the smallest county in England and the only county without a McDonalds! I am a pedigree Rutlander, both my parents families being from the county ( I prefer pedigree to inbred!). I now live in Devon with John who is from Leeds. We chose to tie the knot in Rutland as it is very special to me, being where I grew up and he also really likes it there, it’s a very beautiful place. We are doing the “proper” bit at Oakham registry office and then heading off to Ayston for the reception. Ayston is where I grew up, its a tiny village with 14 houses and a church, not even a pub or a shop. As you can imagine it was an amazing place to grow up, many dens to be made! I was lucky that there was a girl who lived next door who was the same age and totally brilliant, otherwise it could have been a bit lonely. She is my best mate now and we are having the reception in a marquee in her family’s field. It’s going to be a relaxed affair with a festival feel. In the afternoon there will be a pork pie wedding cake, buffet and speeches then later the rabble will turn up, we will have a hog roast and my brothers rave rap ska band, China Shop Bull, will play, there will be hip hop karaoke and djs into the night.

The wedding is going to be real fun, and very individual to us. We are going to get Louisa (my best mate) and Rob’s bad ass vintage car collection out to rev around in on the day which make ace props for photos. The location will be great, we are considering dressing the marquee in an under the sea theme (not decided as yet but I’m into the idea). My mum’s mate is going to make my wedding dress which will have a 50s vibe. I want a mahoosive petticoat! The most important thing to me is that our friends and family are all outside partying together. I’m not bothered about the ceremony as much as the party. I just think it’s going to be great to get friends that I have met from all different times in my life all together in one place to celebrate that I’ve found someone I want to stay with forever. Which is pretty impressive and I feel very lucky to have him, even if he does rap sleazy lyrics to me over breakfast!”

2) Charlie & Simon

Charlie and Simon are having a circusy Rock ‘n Roll themed wedding in a circus traiming school that used to be a church! Um, yes please! Here’s Charlie’s take on their wedding:

“We’re getting married on the 13th of October in Bristol. Our reception venue is a church that’s been converted into a circus training school, and it’s an amazing space. We’re having dramatic lighting up the beautiful pillars and planning a low key and relaxed rock and roll / circus theme. We’re getting married in Bristol Registry office at 3pm, which is a lovely place and then we’re planning on having photos done around St Nic’s market which is a covered market and food hall just next door. We’re going to have tea and cakes after the wedding for the family and then heading onwards to Circomedia to meet all our marvellous friends at 6pm. We’ll then be having a small show of some kind (big secret!) and serving international style canapes (mini boerewors rolls as a nod to my South Africaness, filo cones with goats cheese to look like ice creams, empanadas – as we both love Brazil), and then moving onto some excitingly presented dinner. And then there will be a rock band and 100% ridiculous dancing. We’re really keen that it’s really relaxed and untraditional affair – no big white dress, no hired suits for everyone, no ridiculous traditions that we aren’t keen on and basically lots of fun and happiness for everyone.”

3) Sarah and Carl

Sarah and her lovely boy ( her words) are having a super-DIY wedding in a tent in a small village, with loads of bunting, vintagey goodies, and a turquoise wedding dress! Ooooh. Just up my alley.

“Our wedding is going to be held in Long Sutton, a small village in Somerset, on July the 14th 2012. We are having a humanist ceremony, so it is all taking place in a big tent. The ceremony will be followed by (weather permitting) drinks on the village green, a tasty meal, and then a barn dance. My mum and sister are v. v. clever, and between us we are DIYing everything. My mum’s making my dress (which is going to be amazing and bright turquoise), my sister is making, among other things, all the stationery, the flower girl dresses, felt button holes for all the ushers and best ‘people’ (of whom there are 4), headdresses for me, the bridesmaids and flower girls, and a fascinator for my mum. We are all making yards of bunting and collecting unusual and wonderful objects from flea markets and charity shops with which to decorate the marquee. We are aiming for a non-traditional, eclectic, colourful, relaxed, fun and smiley day, full of love, imagination and laughter. We can’t wait to say our vows in front of everyone we love. Oh, and there is going to be lots of cake. “

Time is Eternity {Cristelle & Jacques}

This is, without question, the hardest post I’ve ever had to write. When I did this Post-Wedding shoot, I’d even started planning what I would say when I blogged it; how I met Cristelle and Jacques years ago at separate times, in separate places, and only realised when I found Cristelle on Facebook about four or five years ago that these two nice people I’d known in the early 2000s were actually a couple. They got engaged, and eventually planned a lovely DIY wedding in August 2011. As a friend, I desperately wanted to attend their wedding as a guest, and not as a photographer, so I gave them a post-wedding shoot as my wedding gift to them.

One European honeymoon later, and one crazy Christmastime later, we finally got to do the shoot together.

Three weeks later I got the call from one of our mutual friends: Jacques had died of an unexpected heart attack. I was dazed, shocked and numbed.

“But I just saw him,” was all I could keep saying to myself. To make a horrible situation ridiculously sadder, I had, just a few days earlier, emailed Jacques a photo I’d taken of him alone, specifically for him to send to his publisher to use on his first novel, which was due for publication the following month. It felt so completely stupid and wrong that this lovely, philosophical guy who made my friend so happy, and who was on the eve of being a published author, should just pass away without any warning. So, so wrong.

I still don’t get it. Honestly, I don’t think I ever will. But I’m happier than I ever would be under normal circumstances, that I took these photos. And that photo above, of Jacques holding the pocket watch he wore on his wedding jacket? Unbelievably poignant and full of a meaning it didn’t have before.

Southbank London Couple Shoot {Jane & Dexter}

Jane and Dexter are completely adorable. Jane contacted me a few weeks ago, wanting a couple shoot done while she and Dexter were on holiday in London at the beginning of March. They got married nine months ago in The Phillipines, and actually honeymooned in London, but didn’t get any photos done then – so now that they were coming again, Jane made sure they’d get some this time! Of course they wanted some great London landmarks in the background, so they chose Southbank for its views of Westminster, Big Ben, and the London Eye, and I was more than thrilled to shoot there, because it was my first time doing so!

Crazy Awesome Wedding: Karen & Willem at Greenleaves

Willem and Karen’s wedding was ridiculously fun, full of awesomeness, overflowing with love, and incredibly pretty. Because that’s what Karen and Willem are! (Ok, maybe not pretty for Willem (sorry, dude), but Karen looked pretty enough for both of them on their wedding day, with the biggest smile I’ve ever seen). Juanette, who assisted me as she so often does, and I had an absolute blast shooting these two and their friends, and so narrowing down the images for this blog post was quite the epic task!

Every little detail of the day, from the signs directing guests to the chapel, to the fingerprint tree guestbook and the adorable little ringboxes, was so beautifully planned out, and detail-crazy me went nuts shooting them. I love it when my couples give me gorgeous things to photograph!

Also, there was a DANCE-OFF. Between Willem and his sister, though after that I think quite a few people needed to show off their skills too! See the last few photos of this post for proof!

This was also my last wedding before I left for the UK, and though I’ll be back to shoot more in April and September, it’s not quite the same. So this was a fantastic one to end off with!

Trash the Dress {Taryn & Marc}

You might remember Taryn and Marc’s gorgeous wedding at Shepstone Gardens last year, which was also featured in the UK magazine, “Wedding“. I met up with them again in Pretoria a few weeks ago to take some fun day-after photos. We started off in a playground, because we’re all three cool like that, and ended up in some lovely fields in a game reserve. Awesomeness all round.

No wedding dresses were harmed in the making of these photos.

London Ahoy!

So…you might have noticed a few changes around here over the past eight months or so. The word “London” has been turning up quite a lot, for instance. And that’s because (in case you didn’t already know) Kat Forsyth Photography (aka me) will be moving to London at the end of this month!

It’s a huge adventure, and I can’t wait to get there and start photographing weddings over there! I will still be coming back periodically (this year in April and September) for weddings, so you can still enquire about weddings here if you love my work, and we might be able to sort something out!

Engagement: Warren and Marlette

It all started with the shoes. Somewhere in the middle of last year – no wait, 2010, holy crap! – my friend Cat sent me a cellphone photo of some shoes she’d just seen in a shop. Red-sequinned they were, with black stripey heels, and knowing my obsession with The Wizard of Oz and ruby slippers (I even wore a pair of red shoes on my wedding day), she knew I’d love them.

She was right. After she told me the price-tag, I knew they had to be imported, so I went and Googled, and found them almost immediately. And that was my introduction to the kickass-ness that is Iron First Shoes. I’m not even a shoe girl, and I hardly ever wear heels, but hot damn, I wanted everything on that website. I couldn’t get the ruby slippers out of my head, so a few weeks later I popped into the shop Cat had been in to see them in person.

Well. The only pair left was the display pair, and they were one size too small for me. But they were On Sale. ON SALE. For one fifth of the original price! So in order to justify the purchase, I decided I would buy them to use in a shoot one day. Photographing them’s just as good as wearing them, right? In fact, better, because it’d be more comfy.

So I bought the shoes – and another pair which actually do fit me, and were also on sale (score!) [see them in the couple shoot I did last year] – and left the store resolving to do a shoot based around them. Which I planned in the back of my head for ages, trying to get past the craziness that was last year and the first portion of this year, and then trying to find a dress, and a venue, and props, and a male model…

Finally we put it all together; I shot it last month, and here it is. My models were Cat and Louis, who are both in bands – Cat is the lead singer in a Rock ‘n Roll Band, and Louis is the drummer for TWO bands! They even brought along a few props to play with. The dress was made by Carla from Estienne Carla Photography, who is not only a crazy talented photographer, but an epic dress designer (Carla, you ROCK!!), and the makeup was done by the most fabulous makeup artist, Sam Scaife of Lashline, whom I love and adore! The coke can bouquet was made by an awesome guy named Christopher, who sits on the pavement outside the Woolworth’s on First Avenue Linden, selling his crafts, and the shoes were MINE. All mine.

Angie and Maurice have a great love story – they were together years ago, and it didn’t work out. But lo and behold, they met up again, and they just KNEW. This time it was right. I’m a firm believer in timing being right for things to happen, and this year I’ve had that proved to me by not only Angie and Maurice, but also by Silja and Rob, whose wedding story you can read here. Sometimes the best part of being a wedding and couple photographer is being inspired by your clients!

Angie and Maurice were so sweet together, and so full of fun! We really lucked out with the weather, too – I was worried it would storm in the afternoon as it has done so often lately, but though the stormclouds did in fact roll up, they stayed nicely on one side of the sky for us to get some dark, cloudy photos, while the other direction was bathed in soft golden light. Yum.
